Street Theatre
Street theatre is outdoor theatrical performances that don't have a specific paying audience. Street theatre can take place almost anywhere, from a park to a parking lot, to a street corner. Performers range from buskers to organized theatre companies who are perhaps experimenting with outdoor space or raising money for a cause or maybe even doing some guerrilla theatre.
Often outdoor performances can seem out of context. A group of people dressed in costume carrying on about something or other, seems a bit odd to the average onlooker. But suspicion tends to get the best of most people, who will eventually stop, watch, and maybe even engage.
The fun thing about street theatre is that it may be an actual performance, or it may just be a person, or a group of people in costume, standing around looking slightly out of place. It brings art to any and every setting.
It is unexpected and therefore almost impossible not to be entertaining.
Generally costumes are a big part of the spectacle. They tend to be the first thing that gets noticed. And, if extravagant enough, will really make the actors stand out. People dressed funny is almost a guaranteed laugh, so when setting out to put on a street performance, it's worth taking the time to carefully plan costumes.
While many of the performers that you see on the streets are struggling artists trying to make some money, they are often very talented. In fact, street performance, in many areas is a big part of the cultural experience. Street performers have to be able to not only hone their craft, but draw a crowd, get them excited and keep them entertained. Have you ever walked by a big group of people huddled around a performer and when you get close, see that he/she is not very good at all? Well the reason for the crowd is because of their loud voice, big personality and ability to draw people in. Street performances can become quite successful. In fact, Guy La Liberte, the founder and creator of Cirque du Soleil, started his career as a busker. Today he is one of the wealthiest men in Canada and considered a creative genius by many.
There are of course many types of outdoor performance that aren't street. For these performances, actors are often on a stage with build in sound and lighting equipment. Tickets are generally bought ahead of schedule, and the performances tend to go on for at least a few days.
This kind of outdoor theatre can be seen everywhere from schoolyards to community centres, to stand along performance venues.
